Public equity markets can experience a correction and in that process, significant amounts of market capitalization can evaporate. Earnings turn downward, credit becomes tighter, merger and acquisitions activity slows and access to liquidity through initial public offerings is severely curtailed. As a result, investors that re-balance allocations and portfolio holdings consider the option of actively managing their sub-allocations to various types of private equity positions through sales on the secondary market.
